The Accidental Bathroom Remodel
How it began…
On our long list of house projects, remodeling the basement bathroom was not in the top 5, or even the top 10. I avoided going in there because the whole room was a haphazard DIY project from a previous homeowner and was fine ignoring it since it was in the basement and guests rarely saw it.
However, the toilet in the bathroom began to have a slow leak. My husband decided to take out the toilet to address the issue (he said the wax ring likely needed to be replaced) and while the toilet was out, he decided to put in the new flooring we purchased (last year!) for the basement. My mouth opened and words tumbled out before I knew it (which isn’t so uncommon for me). I found myself saying, “Why put down the nice, new floor when the walls, shower, and sink are hideous? Let’s redo the whole thing.” And that’s how the remodel began. Totally my fault!
A little tour of the bathroom before:
This bathroom has drywall that was nailed up and painted over. There is no tape over the drywall seams and the shower is a cheap insert from the 90’s. This had been the primary shower for the house, so the bathroom was well used by previous owners. I cannot imagine staring at the drywall seams every day!
The owners that we purchased the house from installed a water pressurizer and the huge tank lives in this bathroom. Shiny vinyl flooring is another feature I was excited to get rid of!
Slow progress:
My husband is finishing his degree and working full-time, and I work full-time, and we have kids, oh AND we are adamant diy people, so this project will take us awhile to finish! The flooring went in first, then the first wall of shiplap.
