Shed Makeover!
Summertime is for painting.
I love freshening up areas of our house with a new coat of paint. But then once I start to paint one area of my house, I can’t ignore others areas that so badly need a refresh. Our shed is the first building people see when pulling up to our house, and while it had quaint charm with the all-cedar siding, I decided it needed a little facelift.
Shed Makeover:
The first area I updated was the door. After finishing the front door was complete, my paintbrush led me to the shed door. The faded light green door became the sunny Spiced Butternut color by Olympic, just like our front door. I began working out a game plan for the rest of the shed while painting the door because sometimes the best projects happen on a whim!
I decided to paint all of the roof trim, corner trim, and windows a crisp white to offset the cedar. The roofline was a debate – we thought there might be too much white, but after priming a bit I realized it would look odd if left unpainted. My amazing dad replaced two broken panes of glass on one of the windows. Tree branches whipped in the wind and shattered two panes. I have since trimmed the branches that are in the photo below so we won’t have any more broken windows! (Well by trees, anyhow. Kids are a bit more unpredictable)
The first primer I used on the cedar turned yellow, so my dad loaned me his can of Rust-Oleum Cover Stain Primer.
This is an oil-based primer and it is no joke. I used it to paint over the areas I had primed and it held its color nicely. Here it is on Amazon:
I then added two coats of white paint on top of the primer and finished painting the shed!
The Roof:
The roof, covered in moss, also needed my attention. Using a rake, I climbed up a ladder and simply raked the dried moss off the roof. The roofing under the moss seemed to be in pretty decent shape! While professionals I am sure would say that’s not the right way to clean a roof, it worked for me!
What do you think of the transformation?

Bright and shiny, the shed looks brand new! A definite eye popper. Great job Amy.
