Easy Leprechaun Trap!

Easy Leprechaun Trap!

For a St. Patrick’s Day themed homework assignment, my kindergartener had to make a leprechaun trap. We created this fun and easy leprechaun trap out of simple items that we mostly already had!

We started with the gold hat that my son wore on his birthday (his golden birthday was this year!) and used that as the basis for the trap.

I hot glued popsicle sticks into a ladder and my son painted it.

The rainbow is made out of pipe cleaners, but I reinforced them with little pieces of cardboard so they would hold their shape better. The cotton ball “clouds” cover the cardboard.

We cut a hole in the top of the trap and then glued pieces of paper over it so the leprechaun would fall into the hat when he tried to grab the golden coin! The sign on the front of the hat will entice the leprechaun to climb the ladder. It says, “Free gold candy.”

Finally, we also created a little window at the bottom so we could see if we caught a leprechaun! Toothpicks reinforced the window so the rascally leprechaun can’t escape!

Overall, this was a fairly quick and fun project to do with my 6 year old. He did all of the painting and writing, we both did some cutting, and I did all of the hot gluing. The hot glue definitely helped move this project along since we didn’t have to wait for Elmer’s glue to dry!

He was so excited about this project that the next morning the first thing he wanted to do was see if he caught a leprechaun! We’ll see if a leprechaun visits us on St. Patrick’s Day, or if he escapes and leaves behind glitter footprints!!!

  1. Well done! Can’t wait to hear if it is successful in catching one or more of those tricky leprechauns on St. Patrick’s Day! 🍀. ☘️

  2. Excellent project and instructions! It is always great to be able to repurpose items as well. Good learning moment for the kiddos! I sure hope that rascally leprechaun doesn’t get away, because I know he won’t be able to resist the chocolate golden coin!
